A well made interview with the man behind the camera and the blog, Scott Schumann talks about his views on fashion today, why he is doing what he does and the power of digital in today’s world.
Extremely hooked on Melbourne. read:extreme.
I secretly wished I’ll be back working there after I graduate. honestly, with such a larger design market that allows for more independent designs and specialization (i even heard from my sister’s friend that some studios actually design typography for commercial purposes, how cool is that?). the working environment forbids slave-driving too.
And the heart-racing moments when I entered Magnation, a 3-storey store selling nothing but magazines, commercial to independent, music to design to lifestyle. Drooling like a child in the candy store. Grabbed my catch, both aussie published ‘boogazines’ or some might call them ‘mooks’, a hybrid between ‘books’ and ‘magazines’. Check out Wooden Toy Quarterly and Process Journal.
At the same time, managed to grab some trippy newspaper catalog on aussie homegrown fashion label Trimapee, started by ex-graphic designers in their twenties (made me second-guessed what am I doing now). Not only did they do fashion, their series of clothes were inspired from a film they directed (newspaper on left).

Now, I’ve left my heart in Melbourne.
The first show I see the designers go onstage during the catwalk to customize every outfit on the models, before the models strut the runway. Sure hell loads of pressure and umpteenth rehearsals. Viktor & Rolf always surprises.
Being an ex-Creative Director at ad agency, Sheena Matheiken was bored of her advertising work and decided to commence on a meaningful project that has since escalated into a successful fund-raising campaign, with just a very simple idea: the Uniform Project, pledging to wear one little black dress for 365 days as an exercise in sustainability and a fundraiser to support the Akanksha Foundation – a non-profit organization providing education to children living in Indian slums.
i’m so glad Sheena Matheiken popped by Qi Global 2010 event for a speech that was utterly inspiring. I’ve heard of the project before, but seeing the real person speak and meeting her for the first time was truly awesome.
A few of my friends in school were currently so inspired by the sartorial social experience, and the other equally uplifting speeches during Qi, that we have decided to set out on similar journey, to wear the same particular top / short dresses for the length of a full month, for a social cause. Details are still in discussion, more updates soon.
We all always know deep inside we would like to contribute back to the society, it is just a matter of taking that first step. Thank you Qi for opening up the doors and our minds to the possibilities.
